Sometimes, teeth are damaged so badly (either through lots of decay or through repeated treatment over the years) that a standard filling will not provide them enough protection. Unless they get the protection they need, they will be predisposed to more decay and possibly cracks or fractures. This is where dental crowns come in.

Think of a crown like a ‘cap.’ An outside layer of the tooth is ‘shaved’ off, a mould is made of the tooth, that mould is used to construct a crown, and the crown is fitted back on the tooth. Crowns are made of porcelain. They are extremely hard and durable and provide a stable, usually long-term solution for damaged teeth. They are also highly aesthetic, and look (and feel) like natural teeth.
